UnaxManoxAlxCuello – Summer Tour

Showcasing their new song on bandcamp, Una Mano Al Cuello did another great job. After their highly recommendable debut EP, this is the second release by the Spanish Emo-/Powerviolence collective. The new song is called Engrampando Cráneos and carries on what UxMxAxC created with their previously released songs. The fivepiece delivers a powerful package out of lashing drums, sick basslines and brilliant guitarwork plus some uptempo as well as some downtempo parts. Digitally released on July 23, the song can be streamed or/and downloaded on the band’s bandcamp page.

Facility / An Anecdote – Split

It is already the second appearance of Facility on our blog. Following their well-made debut, the two new songs on the collaboration with the Swedish screamo group sound like a sequel of the first four. While the leadoff song by An Anecdote from Gothenburg is quite chaotic and destructive, the second one slows down, but without losing any intensity at all. This liaison goes nicely, as the sound of both bands complement quite well. The split will be sold through Facility on their upcoming tours. Information regarding the European release is still expected.

“My hands cut on your halo, split open palms. Some things take a long time. 80 glasses of water and hospital bills, black screen and static.”

Döda Löv - Allt Vi Har Kvar

Already a few months ago, Döda Löv from Sweden, published their follow-up EP of their debut. With Allt Vi Har Kvar Jonatan, Fredrik, Gutte and David created a phenomenal five-songs-collection in the vein of typical Swedish screamo. Thanks to the phenomenal production the musical landscape unfolds its full splendor, as the band from Skåne län makes use of an epic combination of atmospheric, post rockish sound structures and passionate screams. This is Swedish screamo at its best.

Leap Year – Yesterday Morning

„Recorded a little hungover after waking up on a hardwood floor in one take. Cost us $130. I’m starting to like it” And so do we! After a little lineup change the screamo outfit from Edmonton finally released their debut EP called Yesterday Morning. Strongly influenced by 90s/00s Emo, the Extended Play features five beautiful tracks, full of gloomy melodies, which are dominating the guitar-heavy sound of Yesterday Morning. Leap Year is Chad, doing the vox / playing guitar, Jordan playing guitar as well, Keith playing bass and Sam on the drums and we strongly recommend their first release.

Astrid Lindgren – Kryjówka

Good things come to those who wait. Astrid Lindgren from Poznan gave themselves three years to release new musical output. Kryjówka will be on their highly anticipated record, which will be released by Pasażer in this year’s fall. I’m quite excited for this release to come out, as this striking screamo song was made to be listened on rotation. Astrid Lindgren is Szcepan, Goblin, Bialy, Hoody and China and this tune is a banger! Bardzo dobrze, boys!

You Take The Bus When You're Dead – Sure!

Calgary currently seems to be a vibrant place where screamo bands are shooting up like Mushrooms. One of those amazing bands is You Take The Bus When You’re Dead. Recently released, the debut EP of the Canadian threepiece contains three emotive songs, full of heartbreaking lyrics. Indeed those words sometimes sound quite cliché, but let’s be honest: from time to time, we all love to indulge in heartache and melancholy. This EP is worth checking out.

“I don’t know where you are, I just want you to know I miss you. Nothing feels worse than when you’re gone.”

SURHYSA - Moloch & Freigehege

Already shared the stage with bands like Disembarked, The Caulfield Cult and Dawn Ray'd, Moloch & Freigehege is the first, yet only published track of Surhysa. The atmospheric sound of the foursome from Regensburg could be described as darkened screamo combined with hints of crust, a blend that works perfectly well. It’s a pity they don’t have bandcamp yet, but we recommend you to watch the live take of their song. On that note:

„Willkommen im Moloch. Willkommen im Freigehege.“

Ilill – wait

Wait by Ilill is another amazing song that will be part of a proper release. It will be the first track of the upcoming demo of the emoviolence collective from Tokyo. Even if the first recording is still very raw, the emotions are transported well and I guess this is the most important thing. For us, it will be absolutely interesting to follow this project consisting of young and talented musicians. You can download the song on the group’s bandcamp page for free. There also might be a tape release in the future.

You’ll Live – Moving Past This

17:35:00 0 Comments

By now, 2015 was quite boring in respect of album releases; at least for me. So, this is probably the reason why the sophomore full-length record of You’ll Live, occurs to me like a revelation. With Moving Past This, the screamo band from Southern Florida delivered an outstanding piece of emotive music.

Definitely, one of the major strengths of the record can be found on its lyric sheet, in the many sincere and meaningful lines. They deal with a lot of individual concerns and experiences. Vocalist, Nicholas Inman, wrote about different kinds of personal issues, including his feelings about his dying grandpa, a homicide committed by a kid he grew up with and the tragic death of a friend, who died after a traffic accident while his other friends wouldn't help him, leaving him bleeding on the ground.

“One more year passed and you’re still a name. I’ve only seen you hanging in frames. Another year passed but now you’re running out of time. And after all these years there is no feeling of shame. No effort to be a part of our lives. The only thing I have to offer is my final goodbyes.” - Shameless Indifference

“So much anger in your veins with no direction. You just struggled to find yourself. And I guess we could blame it on reoccurring cycles. But every action needs accountability. I watched you struggle every day. A hard life faced with harder choice. But you picked wrong and you paid in time. But that still doesn’t make up for the life lost. You still need to pay. And I don’t think you should be forgiven just yet. And I don’t think this should be forgotten just yet.” - Regretful Actions

“So young and way too reckless you got caught up in all the worst decisions yet. And you thought your friends were there to support you through everything. And that day came to attest that no one was there. By then it was too late to change your fate. You laid there left alone to bleed out. On the street, skull smashed. But not dead just yet. You slowly bled out and stared at the sky. I wonder what you wondered. Was it then when you realized, was it then that you realized? Was it all worth it, was it all worth it?” - Regretful Choices

Even if the album is dominated by Midwest emo sound, the lyrics are wrapped in the beautiful guise of multiple genres. Here and there, the listener stumbles over grungy and indie-ish parts, as well as twinkly guitar riffs that could also be taken out of a Pop Punk song, like in Hasty Maturity. And this is absolutely not a bad thing. The screamo collective from Fort Lauderdale allows no boredom. Every single track holds something special.

While the first songs, including the opener called Tired Of Trying, are featuring the typical sound of You’ll Live, you will also be surprised from time to time. The fantastic Accepting Disapproval, which is my personal highlight on the LP, might be the parade example. Displaying another facet of their musical qualities, the vocals are clean and quite dizzy, lending the opening part of the song some kind of surf vibe. The same style can be found on the last track called Unwanted, which closes the album flawlessly.

“Tell me what I did wrong. I’ll never seem to get this right. Maybe one day you’ll finally appreciate…”

“I’m tired of yelling just to be heard. I’m tired of trying to prove my worth. I’m tired of everyone. I’m finished and I am done.”

With this new record, the band from South Florida made the proof that they developed themselves as songwriters, introducing new elements to their familiar and embosomed sound.

Recorded in March 2105, Moving Past This will be released on 01 September by Skeletal Lightning for America and Dog Knights Productions for Europe. I cannot wait to get my hands on one of the physical copies of this outstanding album.

Heavy Weather – S/T Demo

All ears on Heavy Weather! Published by Chainsaw to the Bass Records, the selftitled demo by Heavy Weather contains three tracks, full of filigree math rock guitar riffs, which are combined with classy screamo vox and from time to time also spoken word and clean vox. This wide range provides alternation on every track. On this beautiful Extended Play, the band from Calgary was able to build a unique bridge between epicness and melancholy, without losing the character of a skramz record. The tape is available on cassette.

The Smudjas – We Will Melt The Sun

Recently played on the open Stage at Fluff, the Smudjas from Milano excels thanks to their grandiose punky Emo Sound. While the instruments create a powerful and joyful foundation, the melancholic vocals, declaimed by the husky voice of Pamela, add the certain kind of something. This terrific combination sounds promising in every way! Watch out, this Italian threepiece kicks ass!

“We’ll fight, we’ll fall, we'll be gone.”

Moro – entrüstet

A few months ago we wrote a few lines about the pre-released “Alp d'Huez”. Now we can finally listen to the rest of Moro’s debut EP. “Entrüstet” contains four songs; each of them is named after a famous Tour de France climb but thematically the political screamo fourpiece from Hamburg takes another direction, transporting a strong message about nowadays' rape culture and sexism. Don’t miss to read the liner notes on their bandcamp.

“Das ist diese Welt in der wir leben und sterben. Du erzählst deine Geschichte heute Abend wieder nicht weil diese Scham dich frisst.“

“Lasst uns Bewusstsein schaffen!“

Forests – Worst Beach Vacation ever, circa 1997

Forests is another amazing band from Singapore. Taking Emo to the beach, the threepiece from Lion City draws influence out of different genres. Their exciting blend out of mathy screamo/emo and even pop punk elements creates a cheerful and entertaining listening experience! The EP, which will be released on tape, features three songs. You can pre-order “Worst Beach Vacation ever, circa 1997” via Lithe Records.

Ps: Shout out to Darell for handing out bananas at gigs. Feed the emo kids.

“Dakota, take me back to the ocean. It's been 21 years since I felt the comfort of water.”

Yearbooks - Inside

18:37:00 0 Comments

Yearbooks is Kris, Vincenzo, Peter and Brian. The screamo fourpiece recently released their first full-length called “Inside”, which follows their debut EP “See You Next Year”. The record got premature praise from the screamo institution “CMHWAK” who called the record “Best Skramz record in years”. So there was no other choice than to check out this album. And in fact, I totally understand this gushing feedback, since I really liked “Inside” from the first listen on.

The album is opened by “Act of Contrition”, which starts straightforwardly, giving the listener a pretaste on the following seven tracks. After this furious introduction, the vocals on the following “You Can't Go Home Again” are less rough. But do not think that it’s losing any dynamic or intensity, no! While the vocals are changing the pace from slow to fast and the other way around, the instruments create a cheery atmosphere. The song finds its highlight during the last third, as different vocals are combined to a chorus, which is only accompanied by the sound of a distorted guitar.

"No one stares as hard as me. No one says what I have said. No one is as mean as me. No one scars me as deep as me."

The next song “Someone to Watch Over Me” starts with a nice drum solo. As vocals, guitar and bass drop in, the song gathers pace, awekening the urge to just let go and dance. With 4:30, the subsequent “A Measure of Salvation” is the longest track on the album. During the whole song, which connects fluently to its forerunner, the desperate screams change in style and tempo, creating a beautiful and dynamic listening experience, rounded off by the perfect arrangement of the instruments.

“Don’t you think of me, when I close the door?”

Compared to the previous songs, the sound of “Sine Qua Non” is more thoughtful, showing a different side of Yearbooks. So the follow-up comes just right in time. The instrumental song called “Taking a Break From All Your Worries” is characterized by a catchy guitar riff, which is repeated, till the guitars distort, slowly sinking into chaos. Rising out of this chaos, “Six Degrees of Separation” paves the way for the grand finale.

The closing track on the LP is the absolutely phenomenal “Islanded in the Stream of Stars”. While the character of the intense sound is shaped by some sneaky changes in tempo, the vocals change from melancholic to angry, also containing a mighty chorus which gave me goose bumps.

With “Inside”, the band from Oakland, California, created an outstanding album full of catchy melodies and moving vocals, where every single second is fun listening to. I didn’t hear such a groovy sound since Comadre called it a day back in 2013.

For me, it’s definitely a strong contender for the best LPs, released this year.
